    Gallstone Removal Dhaka

Gallstones are hardened deposits inside the gallbladder. Once they cause pain, infection, or jaundice, surgical removal is the only definitive cure. Dr. Murshidul Arefin offers laparoscopic gallstone removal as a routine day-care procedure at Popular Medical College Hospital, Dhanmondi.

Symptoms that mean stones need removal

    • Right upper-abdominal pain after fatty meals (biliary colic)
    • Pain radiating to the right shoulder or back
    • Nausea, vomiting, fatty-food intolerance
    • Yellowing of eyes or skin (jaundice — suggests bile-duct stone)
    • Fever with right-upper pain (cholecystitis or cholangitis — emergency)

How stones are diagnosed and assessed

Diagnosis is straightforward with an abdominal ultrasound, which detects 95% of gallbladder stones. If a bile-duct stone is suspected (raised liver enzymes, jaundice, dilated ducts), Dr. Arefin orders an MRCP for non-invasive bile-duct mapping. Routine pre-op blood work and an ECG complete the workup.

    Surgical approach

The standard treatment is laparoscopic cholecystectomy — keyhole removal of the entire gallbladder containing the stones. If a stone has slipped into the common bile duct, Dr. Arefin performs laparoscopic common bile duct exploration at the same sitting, or coordinates pre-operative ERCP. Trying to remove only the stones (leaving the gallbladder) is not recommended — stones recur in >90% of cases.

What happens if you ignore symptoms

Untreated symptomatic gallstones cause recurrent attacks and serious complications — acute cholecystitis, empyema, gallstone pancreatitis, cholangitis, and (rarely) gallbladder cancer. Elective day-care surgery is far safer than emergency surgery during an attack. Book a consultation early.
